Need for Snehapoorvam Scholarship Scheme Implementation for 2023
According to statistics, there are approximately 75,000 children below 18 years living in orphanages in Kerala. The state has around 1500 functioning orphanages. Surprisingly, a significant proportion of these children (around 80-90%) actually have families and relatives. Tragically, many of them are pushed further into poverty when the family's primary breadwinner passes away or becomes unable to work. Witnessing the death of a parent is an extremely traumatic experience for any child, compounded by the loss of guidance and protection that an adult provides. Consequently, children without proper adult care are at a higher risk of being abused and exploited.
These vulnerable children include orphans, abandoned children, and those who have lost their parents due to war, communal riots, natural disasters, accidents, and other unfortunate events. They lack basic necessities such as proper food, shelter, healthcare, education, and recreational opportunities. Often, they face economic and social exploitation, and they are deprived of the love and affection that a family should provide, sometimes being unwanted by their own family members.
Children represent the most valuable assets of our nation, and investing in them is an investment in a better future for our country and the world. Recognizing the challenging situations faced by some children, particularly orphans, the Kerala Government has launched a commendable initiative called the Snehapoorvam Scholarship. The scheme aims to provide financial assistance to orphans who are living with their families, relatives, friends, or within the support of the community. Implemented through the Social Welfare Department and managed by the Social Security Mission, the project strives to integrate these children into the mainstream of society, providing them with a brighter and more promising future.
